Ultimate Guide: How to Use an Xbox Controller on Steam

To use an Xbox controller on Steam, connect it to your PC by USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, then confirm that Steam detects it under Steam > Settings > Controller. Choose the right connection

USB connectors vary: newer Xbox Wireless Controllers use USB-C, while older models may use Micro-USB. Step 1: Connect the controller to Windows

1. Turn on the controller and connect it to the PC with a data-capable USB cable.
2. Wait a few seconds for Windows to recognize the device. If the Xbox light does not stay on or Windows does not respond, try another USB port and a cable known to transfer data.
3. Keep the cable connected while you do the first test. This removes Bluetooth pairing as a possible cause if Steam does not detect the pad.

Bluetooth setup

1. On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and switch Bluetooth on. Select Add device > Bluetooth.

First launch a game that supports a standard controller. If the buttons work, you can keep the default settings. Steam Input is useful when you want a different button layout, need a community configuration, or the game does not recognize the controller correctly.

1. In your Steam Library, open the game's Properties > Controller page.
2. Leave the game on its default controller setting first. If input fails, set the game's override to Enable Steam Input and relaunch it.
3. If the game already has native Xbox support but you get duplicate or unexpected input, test Disable Steam Input for that game, then relaunch. Choose the setting that works with that title.
4. Open the game's controller layout editor to select a template, browse community layouts, or edit button and stick mappings. Test the chosen layout in-game before relying on it.

For a clean setup, change one option at a time and test again. A community layout can be helpful, but it may have been made for a different game version or play style. Standard Xbox controllers also do not have a gyro sensor, so Steam Input cannot provide built-in gyro aiming on these models.

• Steam does not detect the controller: Check whether Windows lists it first. If not, replace the cable, use another USB port, or pair it again in Bluetooth settings.
