PSN Game Sharing: What’s Allowed, What’s Risky, and How to Protect Your Account

PSN game sharing is built around console settings, not a license that you can freely pass between friends. Sony lets other users on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled access eligible games and selected PlayStation Plus benefits. On PS4, a player can designate one primary PS4 console. The main safety rule is easy to miss: Sony says not to share your account details with anyone. How PSN game sharing works on PS5 and PS4

When the account that bought a game enables the relevant console setting, other users on that same console can play eligible purchased and downloaded games from their own profiles. The feature does not transfer ownership: the purchase stays associated with the buyer’s PlayStation account, and access depends on the setting, the license, and—where relevant—an active subscription.

Sony’s activation limits allow one PS5 and one PS4 to be active at the same time. The PS5 setting is separate from the PS4 primary activation; claims that an account can enable sharing on two PS5s at once are incorrect. Which PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared?

PlayStation Plus game sharing covers selected benefits on the enabled PS5 and primary PS4, not every feature in the subscription. Other benefits stay with the subscribing account. The real PSN game sharing risks

• Account takeover or lockout: A person with your sign-in details may change account information or make it harder for you to recover access. Sony warns that sharing credentials compromises account security.
• Unwanted purchases: Someone using your account could make Store purchases or change account settings. Never disclose payment details or one-time codes, and protect purchases with the security options available for your sign-in method.
• Activation conflicts: Enabling a different PS5 or primary PS4 can remove access from the console already activated. If you no longer have the old device, remote deactivation removes all consoles and is limited to once every six months.
• Missing games or subscription access: A game may be unavailable to other users if it was not purchased by the account that enabled sharing, the subscription has expired, a catalog title is no longer available, or a license or network issue is present.
• Terms and suspension exposure: Sony’s security guidance says sharing account details is a breach of its Terms of Service. Sony says terms violations can lead to temporary or permanent account suspension, and serious violations can result in console suspension. That does not mean the official console-sharing setting automatically triggers a ban; the avoidable policy risk is giving other people your account credentials or using unofficial paid-sharing schemes.

A safer way to share games at home

1. Keep the setup household-based. Choose the shared console you or your household control. The feature is for access by other users on that console, not a way to distribute your library across unlimited systems.
2. Use each person’s own profile. The account owner enables sharing on the console; other players should use their own PlayStation accounts and profiles. Do not send your password, passkey, sign-in email, recovery details, or text-message codes to another person.
3. Enable the correct setting. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then choose Enable. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. If you change consoles, deactivate the previous device where possible before activating the new one.
4. Secure the account and payment flow. Use a passkey or a strong, unique password, protect the email account tied to PSN, and set a console login passcode. Sony also offers “Require Password at Checkout” for purchases; note that this option is not compatible with passkeys.
5. Review access after a device change or security scare. Sign out from consoles you no longer use. If you cannot access a device, remote deactivation is available through Account Management, but Sony limits the all-device action to once every six months. PlayStation Family Management is useful for child accounts, age ratings, spending limits, and parental controls. It is not an unlimited game-sharing pass for unrelated accounts; game access still follows the console’s sharing and activation settings.

• Share Play: Invite an online friend to watch or participate in a supported play session without giving them your account password. It is a temporary session feature, not permanent access to your library; check the game and membership requirements first.
• Physical games: If you own a disc-based copy and both consoles support discs, lending the disc avoids exposing account credentials. The disc must be available to play.
• PlayStation Plus catalog: Each player can subscribe on their own account to access the games and benefits available in that region and membership plan. Availability changes, so check the Store before subscribing.
• Separate digital purchases: For friends who live in different homes, buying a copy on each account is the clearest way to keep separate licenses and account security.
