How FiveM and GTA RP servers work
FiveM lets players connect to custom GTA V servers that can run community-made resources and scripts. The server owner chooses which systems to use. One city may focus on everyday jobs and social scenes; another may have a detailed legal system, custom businesses, or a more structured crime storyline. How to get started with GTA RP
- Install a legitimate PC copy of GTA V. Start the game once and make sure it is updated. Cfx requires a legitimate copy, and its current download page lists different requirements for FiveM Legacy and FiveM for GTA V Enhanced. Check which game edition the community supports before installing.
- Download FiveM from its official site. Use FiveM.net, review the current Creator Platform License Agreement, and follow the official installation guide. The installer asks you to point to your GTA V installation and sign in with a Cfx account.
- Choose a server that fits you. Use the FiveM server browser or a community’s official information channels. Check its language, time zone, voice requirements, roleplay style, rules, supported game version, queue, and whether it is public or whitelisted. Avoid downloads or login requests from unofficial links.
- Read the rules and prepare a simple character. Follow the server’s application process if it has one. A short character idea—a job, a motivation, and a couple of traits—is enough to begin. You can add detail as you meet people.
- Join and give scenes room to develop. Introduce yourself, listen, and respond to what other characters do. Roleplay works best when players leave each other space to make choices rather than deciding the outcome for everyone.
FiveM for GTA V Enhanced entered early access in July 2026, alongside the established Legacy client. Cfx still lists Enhanced as early access, and the two versions are not automatically interchangeable for every server or mod. Before you install extra files or troubleshoot a connection, check which game version the server supports and follow the current Cfx guidance on Legacy and Enhanced.
Common GTA RP rules and terms
There is no single rulebook for all GTA RP servers. The terms below are common in roleplay communities, but exact definitions and penalties vary. Read the rules for the server you join.
- RDM (random deathmatch): Attacking or killing another character without the roleplay context the server requires.
- VDM (vehicle deathmatch): Using a vehicle to attack another player without an allowed in-character reason.
- Metagaming: Using information learned outside the game—such as from a livestream or private chat—to guide what your character knows.
- Powergaming: Forcing an action or result on someone else without giving them a fair chance to respond, or making a character perform unrealistic actions against the server’s rules.
- Fail RP: A broad server-specific label for behavior that ignores the scene, character, or world rules.
- Combat logging: Leaving the server to avoid an active scene or its consequences, when that server prohibits it.
When uncertain, pause and ask a moderator through the server’s approved channel. Do not use livestreams, Discord messages, or information from another character to give your own character knowledge they did not gain in the scene.

The Creator Platform License Agreement also says individual custom servers are not automatically approved, sponsored, or endorsed by Rockstar. In practical terms, GTA RP is community-operated, with Rockstar rules applying to the platform and server operators.
Does GTA RP cost money?
The FiveM client is free to download, but you need a legitimate copy of GTA V. A community may have its own optional services or access process; check its terms before paying for anything. Rockstar’s Creator Platform agreement restricts certain types of commercial activity, so a server’s payment offers should not be assumed to be permitted just because the server is popular.
Can you play GTA RP on PS5, PS4, or Xbox?
The FiveM custom-server route described here is for PC. NoPixel V is another PC-focused route: Rockstar announced its closed beta for September 8, 2026, with invited players accessing it through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
