If you earn an S grade on your main League of Legends champion and no Hextech Chest appears, that usually isn’t a bug. Under Riot’s current reward system, champion grades don’t directly drop chests. The regular ways to earn them are through the active Battle Pass and eligible Honor Objectives; you can also buy chests in the store. Check those reward tracks first, then look in your Loot inventory. Riot’s current Hextech Crafting FAQ lists those sources.
Riot changed the chest reward path in 2025. In its update, Riot said chests would come through the Pass instead of Champion Mastery so players with different champion pools and playstyles could earn them. That means one-tricking your favorite champion is not a chest-earning strategy anymore, and playing a different champion just to avoid an old cooldown will not fix the issue.
Champion Mastery still matters, but its rewards are different. Riot’s current Champion Mastery Guide describes grades and season milestones as ways to earn Mastery Marks, while mastery missions can grant Battle Pass XP. That XP may help you reach a chest milestone on the Pass, but the chest comes from the Pass reward track—not from the S grade itself.
So if the question is “Why can’t I earn chests on this League of Legends champion?”, the short answer is that chest eligibility is no longer tied to a specific champion’s grade or recent chest history.

First, decide whether you’re expecting a chest because of an S grade, a mastery milestone, a Pass reward, or an Honor mission. If the match result is the only evidence, there may be no chest to claim. Keep playing your main if you enjoy the champion, but don’t grind extra games expecting a direct chest drop. A high grade can still support mastery progress and, through mastery missions, Pass XP; it just isn’t a direct chest reward.
Open the current Pass and scan its reward milestones for a chest icon. Confirm which reward lane contains it, whether you have reached that level, and whether the reward still needs to be claimed. Pass lineups can change, so use the track in your client rather than an old list of levels from a previous Act or season. If you are short on progress, follow the activities shown for the current Pass; a mastery mission that grants Battle Pass XP may help you move toward a chest milestone.
Don’t assume every chest appears automatically after a match. The match can contribute progress, but the reward is tied to the milestone shown on the Pass.
Riot’s current FAQ lists Honor Objectives as a chest source, and Riot previously described Honor chests as mission rewards. Open the current Objectives or missions area and look for an Honor-related task that specifically names a Hextech Chest. Check the task’s progress and claim state. Don’t rely on blanket claims that Honor Level 2 is always required; follow the requirement displayed for the active objective.
This also avoids a common mix-up: a higher Honor standing and a chest mission are related to the reward system, but they are not interchangeable. The in-client objective tells you what you must complete for that particular reward.
After claiming a Pass or Honor reward, check your Loot or Hextech Crafting inventory. Riot notes that Hextech Crafting has its own inventory, and chests are opened with keys. If the chest is listed but you cannot open it, the problem is a missing key—not a missing chest. If you don’t see the chest at all, return to the reward track and confirm that the milestone or mission shows as completed and claimed.
Close and relaunch the League client, then recheck the same Pass or Honor objective and your Loot inventory. If the reward is still absent, submit a ticket through Riot Support. Include the reward source, the objective or Pass level, when you claimed it, and a screenshot of the completed reward if you have one. That gives Support a concrete record to investigate. Avoid third-party “chest tracker” tools that ask for your Riot account password.
Hextech Chests on your main League of Legends champion are no longer earned by getting an S grade on that champion. Check the current Battle Pass and Honor Objectives, claim any listed chest, and verify it separately from your key in Loot. Your main can still help you build mastery and Pass XP, but the reward track—not champion selection—determines whether a chest is available.
