Why Does My PlayStation Screen Go Black Randomly? PS5 & PS4 Fixes

If your PlayStation screen goes black randomly, first check whether the console is still running. When game audio continues or the power light stays on, focus on the HDMI connection, display input, or a video setting. If the console freezes or shuts off too, check its power indicator, ventilation, and system software. Work through the low-risk checks below before resetting anything.

A black screen does not automatically mean the console’s graphics hardware has failed. These are troubleshooting clues, not proof of a particular fault. Note whether the console remains on, whether audio continues, and whether the TV reports “No Signal”; those details help separate a display-link problem from a system or power issue.

Fix a PlayStation black screen, step by step

1. Check the HDMI path from console to screen

1. Turn off the TV or monitor and the PlayStation.
2. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. Look for a loose fit, bent connector, or visible cable damage; do not force a connector into the port.
3. Select the TV’s correct HDMI input, then try a different HDMI port and, if available, a known-good cable.
4. Connect the console directly to the TV or monitor for testing. Temporarily remove a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, or capture card from the path.

For PS5, Sony recommends the included HDMI 2.1 cable for high-performance features such as 4K at 120 Hz, but confirms that older HDMI cables can also be used. So an HDMI 2.1 cable is not required for every PS5 display setup; testing another compatible cable is more useful than buying one immediately. PS4 troubleshooting likewise recommends a compatible high-speed HDMI cable.

2. Fully power-cycle the console and display

After saving or closing anything you can, shut down the console completely; do not unplug it while it is on or in Rest Mode. Turn off the display and disconnect the console’s and screen’s power cables. PlayStation’s no-picture steps specify waiting 20 minutes before reconnecting the power cables and turning the devices back on. Then check whether the picture stays stable. This can clear a temporary display handshake problem, but it will not repair a damaged port or cable.

3. Use Safe Mode to test the video output

If the regular home screen remains blank, Safe Mode can help identify a resolution or HDCP compatibility issue. On either console, first turn it off by holding the power button for about three seconds. Once it is off, press and hold the power button again and release it after the second beep, which sounds about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

• PS5: In Safe Mode, choose Change Video Output, then try Change Resolution. Sony also lists Change HDCP Mode as an option that can help troubleshoot a blank screen.
• PS4: Choose Change Resolution; the console restarts at 480p so you can test whether the display accepts a basic signal.
• PS4 Pro: If the blank screen is limited to 4K content and the display or another device in the chain does not support HDCP 2.2, Sony documents Set HDCP Mode in Safe Mode. HDCP 1.40 may restore a picture, but can limit output to 1080p.

Safe Mode options differ by model. Avoid Reset PS5, Initialize PS4, and system-software reinstallation as early experiments: these can erase user data. 4. Update the display and adjust demanding video settings

If the image returns, install any available TV or monitor firmware update using the manufacturer’s instructions. Also check for a PlayStation system software update. On PS5, look under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings; PS4 has a separate system software update menu. Update the game or app too if the blackout occurs only there.

If blackouts happen only when HDR, 4K, 120 Hz, or variable refresh rate is in use, temporarily disable the relevant feature or select a standard resolution while the picture is visible. Change one setting at a time and test again. The PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 Hz with a compatible display and cable chain, but the TV, cable, receiver, and other connected devices must all handle the selected signal.

Check for overheating or a console fault

If the console itself shuts down, allow it to cool before restarting. Put it in a well-ventilated location and make sure nearby objects are not blocking its vents. PlayStation identifies a pulsing red PS4 light as an overheating indicator; the console’s indicator colors can help distinguish a power or system problem from a TV-only signal loss. Do not open the console or insert tools into its HDMI port as part of basic troubleshooting. If the HDMI socket is visibly loose or damaged, the console repeatedly loses picture on more than one display with different cables, or it keeps shutting down after cooling and improving ventilation, stop testing and use PlayStation Repairs and hardware support. A repair assessment is more appropriate than repeated factory resets when the issue points to a physical fault.
