2013: GTA 5 originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360

Rockstar Games announced the final September 17 date on January 31, 2013, after moving the game back from its previously planned spring release window. The studio responsible for its development was Rockstar North. The setting is Los Santos and the surrounding countryside of Blaine County, a fictionalized take on Southern California.

GTA 5 stood out for its three playable story protagonists—Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips—whose intertwined stories center on robberies, criminal enterprises, and the city around them. Did GTA Online launch on the same day?

No. GTA Online began rolling out on October 1, 2013, exactly two weeks after GTA 5's story campaign arrived. At that time, Rockstar enabled online access through a game title update for PS3 and Xbox 360. The multiplayer mode continued to evolve separately through missions, businesses, heists, and later content releases. 2014: GTA 5 arrived on PS4 and Xbox One

The PS4 and Xbox One versions launched November 18, 2014. They were upgraded releases of the same game rather than a sequel or a replacement for the 2013 date. Rockstar added greater detail and draw distance, denser traffic, more wildlife, environmental effects, and a first-person viewpoint that changes the way both walking and driving feel.

Some players remember 2014 as the year GTA 5 came out because that is when they first encountered it on their console. 2015: GTA 5 finally launched on PC

GTA 5 came out for Windows PC on April 14, 2015, approximately 19 months after the PS3 and Xbox 360 release. The PC version supported extensive graphics settings, resolutions of 4K and higher on suitable hardware, mouse-and-keyboard controls, and the Rockstar Editor for capturing and editing game footage.

Its arrival brought GTA 5 to another large player community, including fans interested in offline modifications and more granular graphics settings. However, a PC copy did not make cross-platform GTA Online play universal: platform and edition compatibility are distinct issues. 2022: Native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions arrived

March 15, 2022 marked the launch of GTA 5 and GTA Online editions made for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar described selectable graphics modes with up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, ray tracing in supported modes, quicker loading, enhanced audio, and more detailed environments. PS5 also gained support for DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The newer GTA Online editions introduced features such as Hao's Special Works and a redesigned entry experience. Rockstar also offered standalone GTA Online purchases, so Story Mode and GTA Online need not always be bought as one bundle.

Important correction about the PS5 free offer: GTA Online was available to download and keep at no charge for PS5 players during the first three months after the March 2022 launch. 2025: GTA V Enhanced expanded the PC release history

The release history did not end in 2022. On March 4, 2025, Rockstar launched GTA V Enhanced for PC, bringing features previously associated with the newest console editions to qualifying PC systems. The update added options such as additional ray-tracing effects, upscaling technologies, SSD-related loading improvements on compatible setups, and newer GTA Online features.

Existing PC owners were offered the Enhanced upgrade at no additional cost. Rockstar kept GTA V Legacy available for PCs that do not meet Enhanced's higher minimum requirements. Importantly, GTA Online players using PC Legacy and PC Enhanced cannot join the same session: friends need to use the same PC edition. For players buying or returning to GTA 5 in 2026, the practical choices include the PS4 and Xbox One editions, the newer PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions, and the two PC editions, Enhanced and Legacy. The original PS3 and Xbox 360 releases remain part of the game's history, but they are not the versions to choose for the current GTA Online experience.

Do not confuse a backward-compatible PS4 or Xbox One copy running on a newer console with the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S release: the latter has the newer platform's upgrades.

Rockstar introduced a further ownership benefit in June 2026. Under its support instructions, owners of physical or digital PS4 GTA 5 may download the PS5 upgrade free, although a PS4 disc is needed for ownership verification where applicable.
