Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival RPG set on Arrakis, the desert planet from Frank Herbert’s Dune universe. You explore, gather materials, manage water and heat, craft equipment, build a base, and uncover a cinematic story while the fight for spice shapes life on the planet. It launched on PC in June 2025 and reached PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026. A major September update also added a full single-player mode, so you can now choose between a solo campaign and shared multiplayer.

This is a separate interpretation of Dune’s timeline, not a retelling of the novels or films. In the game’s premise, Paul Atreides was never born, leaving Arrakis open to a different struggle for power. You do not need prior Dune knowledge to follow the story.

What do you do in Dune: Awakening?

The basic loop is to venture into the desert, find resources, get back alive, and use what you collected to improve your equipment and base. Early on, water matters as much as health. A stillsuit helps conserve and recycle moisture, while shade, shelter, and careful routes help you manage Arrakis’s punishing environment. Sandstorms can make travel dangerous, and movement across open sand can draw the attention of a sandworm.

As you advance, you craft weapons, tools, vehicles, and structures. A base can hold crafting stations and refineries, giving you a place to process materials and prepare for longer trips. Spice connects exploration to the planet’s economy and political conflict: the richest deposits are worth pursuing, but the most dangerous areas also bring greater risk from the environment and other players.

Arrakis is more than a field of dunes. The game includes rocky terrain, ruins, settlements, hidden locations, and the Deep Desert. You can travel on foot or use vehicles such as a sandbike and ornithopter. A good trip depends on what you carry, where you travel, and whether you have a safe place to return to.

Is Dune: Awakening single-player or multiplayer?

It is now both. Update 1.5 introduced a full single-player mode with three difficulty presets and detailed settings you can customize. You can tune parts of the survival experience, including environmental pressure and progression, to suit your pace. Single-player has its own character: a multiplayer character cannot be transferred into this mode, so you create a separate one.

Multiplayer remains available for players who want to share a world, cooperate, or take part in the game’s faction and spice conflicts. PvP is optional in the current version; Funcom says the game’s content can be played in PvE without giving up its rewards. Cross-play between platform groups was confirmed as a post-launch feature, but Funcom had not announced a release date in its October 1, 2026 update. Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-progression within Xbox’s supported ecosystem are separate from full cross-play between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Combat, abilities, and character progression

Combat mixes firearms, close-range weapons, abilities, and Dune’s personal shields. The shield changes how you approach a fight, so encounters are not simply a matter of holding down the trigger. You can also study the Schools of the Imperium to unlock different tools and abilities. The five schools are Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Mentat, Trooper, and Planetologist, each associated with a different approach to fighting, tactics, or survival. Your character’s progression and equipment shape your role as you play.

The story gives you reasons to travel beyond the starter areas. You investigate the disappearance of the Fremen, meet familiar figures from the Dune setting, and decide how to make your way through Arrakis’s competing powers. The September 2026 update added the conclusion to Book One, so newcomers can play that story from beginning to end.

Platforms, release dates, and cost

The PC version launched on Steam on June 10, 2025. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched on September 22, 2026. The console launch brought the game’s accumulated updates to new platforms alongside the single-player mode. Xbox also lists the game for Xbox on PC and cloud play, with Game Pass availability in supported markets. Dune: Awakening is not free-to-play. You can buy the base game, with higher editions and optional DLC adding extras or additional content. The Xbox Game Pass listing provides another way to access it while it remains in the catalog and in eligible regions. Store prices, discounts, edition contents, and subscription availability can change by country, so check your local platform store rather than relying on a single global price.
