How to Manage and Delete Old Xbox Captures

Xbox network storage is not OneDrive storage. A clip uploaded to the Xbox network does not automatically mean it has been backed up to OneDrive. Likewise, a capture copied to OneDrive or an external drive should be checked at its destination before you remove the original.

Back up captures you want to keep

1. On your console, press the Xbox button, then open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures. This is the console route Microsoft lists for managing and backing up captures.
2. Review the library and check the storage location for the clips or screenshots you care about. Look for any warning or upcoming-deletion status on captures stored on the Xbox network.
3. Open the capture and make sure it is the right clip. Note the game and date, especially when several clips have similar thumbnails.
4. Use the Captures app’s backup or upload option to send selected captures to OneDrive or an external storage device. The available wording can vary with console updates; follow the destination shown on screen.
5. Verify the copy from the destination itself. For OneDrive, sign in to the same Microsoft account on OneDrive.com or in the OneDrive app and confirm that the file opens. For USB storage, check that the file appears on the drive.

Delete old captures from Xbox console storage

1. Open the Captures app using Xbox button > My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
2. Choose the view or location for captures saved on this Xbox. Check the location label before selecting anything; the library can also show captures stored online or on other destinations.
3. Select an unwanted clip or screenshot and open its available options.
4. Choose Delete and read any confirmation prompt. If the console asks which copy or location to remove, select the local copy only when your goal is to free console storage.
5. Return to the library and check that the capture is gone from the intended location. Keep a verified backup if you may want it later.

Menu labels can shift as the Xbox dashboard changes. If a screen does not match these directions, open Captures from My games & apps and use the location and action labels displayed on your console. Do not assume that deleting a thumbnail from one view also clears every copy.

Remove unwanted captures from the Xbox network

If your goal is to remove an uploaded copy rather than free local console storage, open Captures and switch to the Xbox network view if it is available. Select the capture, use its delete option, and confirm the online copy is the one being removed. Check the item’s status in the Captures app before spending time on a large cleanup: Xbox network captures are already covered by Microsoft’s 90-day deletion policy, while anything you want to preserve should be backed up elsewhere.

Do not rely on an old upload being a permanent archive. Save important clips to OneDrive or external storage and verify the copy before deleting anything. Delete Xbox captures from OneDrive to free cloud space

Deleting a capture on the console does not clean up a separate OneDrive backup. To remove OneDrive copies, sign in to the OneDrive account used for the backup, find the unwanted video or image, and delete it from OneDrive. Search by filename or review the relevant files in your account if you are unsure which item is the Xbox capture.

1. Open OneDrive on the web or in the app and confirm the account shown is the one linked to your Xbox backup.
2. Find the capture and open or preview it if needed, then select Delete.
3. If you want the storage space back immediately, open the OneDrive Recycle bin and permanently delete the item or empty the bin. Deleted OneDrive files can otherwise remain there and still count toward storage usage.
4. Check the storage page again. Microsoft says it can take up to 24 hours for the quota display to update after deletions.
