The fan responds to heat. A demanding game or app can temporarily make it spin faster, which is normal. A blocked side or rear vent, a cramped shelf, or dust around the vents can also restrict airflow and make cooling harder. Noise that appears only during a demanding game may be expected; noise that stays unusually loud at the home screen after ventilation and cleaning checks deserves further attention.
Sony’s PS5 noise guidance recommends keeping vents clear, leaving at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) of open space around each side, avoiding long-fiber carpet and cramped spaces, and using a low-powered vacuum to remove dust. That is a safer starting point than using compressed air or taking the console apart.
Pull the PS5 away from a wall, cabinet panel, or other object that blocks its side or rear vents. Leave at least 10 cm of open space around each side of the console. Avoid pushing it into a narrow entertainment cubby, even if the front looks open; heat can collect in a tight space and reduce the room available for airflow.
Set the console on a stable, hard, flat surface. Do not place it on a long-pile rug, blanket, cushion, or other soft material that can obstruct vents or collect lint. Keep the rear and side openings clear of nearby cables, curtains, and stored items. Use the supplied base or feet in the position required for your console’s orientation.
Turn the PS5 fully off; do not clean it in Rest Mode. Disconnect the AC power cable from the rear and let the console cool. Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to collect dust in and around the air vents, as Sony instructs. Work gently and keep the vacuum attachment at the openings. Do not push tools into the vents, apply liquids, or use compressed air to blast dust farther inside.

Turn off and unplug the console, disconnect the other cables, and wait until it is cool first. After cleaning and restoring airflow, start the PS5 and see whether the fan settles during ordinary menu use. If the behavior seems erratic or began around a software problem, restart the console and check for an update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Select Update System Software if an update is available. Keeping software current is sensible troubleshooting, but an update is not a guaranteed fix for fan noise caused by heat or blocked airflow.
If the fan remains unusually loud at idle after the console has clear space and clean vents, or if you hear grinding, scraping, or persistent rattling, use PlayStation Hardware and Repairs support to troubleshoot and check service options for your region. Do not assume a repair is free: coverage depends on the applicable warranty and local terms. Avoid opening the console to replace the fan or thermal material unless you are qualified and have confirmed the appropriate service route.

Do not replace thermal paste as a first-line fan-noise fix. Sony’s public troubleshooting advice focuses on ventilation and dust removal, and it directs owners to support when those steps do not resolve the issue. Avoid unverified claims that a particular cleaning method will cut noise by a fixed percentage; results depend on the console’s condition and setup.
A fan that speeds up while a game or app is working hard, then quiets down after you leave it, can be normal cooling behavior. Keep the vents open and the surface clear, and judge the sound after the console has had time to cool. If noise remains severe while the console is idle, returns immediately after cleaning, or comes with a warning or shutdown, use PlayStation’s official troubleshooting and repair options rather than continuing to run the system.
