How to Reset League of Legends Client Settings to Default
To reset only your League Client hotkeys, open Settings > Hotkeys and select Restore Defaults. For a broader reset of League's saved client and in-game configuration, Riot's Windows procedure clears the files inside the game's Config folder, checks for files that return, and then rebuilds the configuration in a Custom Game. Back up the folder first: this reset removes preferences you may want to set again.
Use the smallest reset that matches the problem. A client hotkey reset and an in-game controls reset are separate from the full configuration-folder reset described below.
Choose the right League of Legends settings reset
| What you want to reset | Where to go | Scope |
| Client hotkeys | League Client Settings > Hotkeys > Restore Defaults | Returns client hotkeys to standard bindings. |
| In-game controls | In a game, press Esc, open Options, then Controls | Resets the in-game control settings. |
| Saved configuration files | Back up and clear the contents of the League Config folder | Rebuilds the broader local configuration through Riot's documented procedure. |
Riot's Hotkeys (Keybindings) FAQ explains that hotkeys can be changed in both the League Client and in-game Options. Its client-level Restore Defaults control is the quickest choice if only a client binding is wrong.
Reset client hotkeys only
- Open the League Client and select the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Hotkeys.
- Select Restore Defaults to return the client hotkeys to their standard bindings.
If a key still behaves differently during a match, reset in-game controls separately: start or join a game, press Esc, open Options and Controls, then choose Reset to game defaults. The names and placement of controls may shift in a client update, so check Riot's current support page if your menu looks different.
Full configuration reset on Windows
Riot's Reset Configuration Files guide, updated September 19, 2026, gives the Windows procedure below. The default League installation path is C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Config. If you installed League in another location, use that installation's Config folder.
Before deleting configuration files
Note or screenshot any preferences you want to recreate, such as keybindings, video, audio, interface, and gameplay settings. Then copy the entire Config folder to a clearly named backup location outside the League installation, such as a folder on your Desktop. The backup is a fallback copy; League will not merge those old preferences into the rebuilt configuration automatically.
Follow Riot's reset sequence
- Close League and Riot Client. Exit the game and client before changing configuration files.
- Open the correct Config folder. In File Explorer, enter
C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Config in the address bar. If your installation is elsewhere, navigate to its Config folder instead.
- Back up the folder. Copy the entire
Config folder to the separate location you prepared. Keep the backup outside the live game directory.
- Delete the contents of Config. Select the files inside the folder and delete them, leaving the
Config folder itself in place. Do not delete the parent League folder or uninstall the game.
- Open Riot Client and check again. Return to the same folder. If configuration files have reappeared, delete those files as Riot's guide directs.
- Sign in to League and check once more. Reopen the folder after signing in. Delete any configuration files that have appeared again.
- Start a Custom Game and play for around five minutes. This gives League time to generate fresh configuration files. If you are specifically resetting controls, open Settings, choose Controls, and select Reset to game defaults before closing the game; Riot includes this control reset in its keyboard and mouse troubleshooting steps.
- Close the game and log out. The reset sequence is complete. Start League again and review the settings before entering a match.
The repeated folder checks are intentional parts of Riot's current procedure. Do not assume that deleting the files once is the entire reset. Also keep the backup separate: copying the old files back may restore the settings you were trying to remove.
Reset League configuration on Mac
Riot documents a separate Mac route in its Reinstalling League of Legends article, published May 2, 2024. Back up preferences first, then follow Riot's Mac-specific sequence: launch League and sign in, open Applications, Control-click League of Legends, choose Show Package Contents, and navigate to Contents > LOL. Delete the entire Config folder there, return to the League client, and launch a Custom Game to generate a new folder. This Mac path differs from the Windows procedure; use Riot's current instructions if your app package layout has changed.
If your settings or launch problem remains
Check both hotkey locations before repeating a full reset. Riot's FAQ says keybindings can be changed in the client and in-game, and notes that hotkeys are account-bound and saved on Riot's servers. If one custom binding persists, the two locations may not have been reset in the same way.
A configuration reset does not repair every game-file or launch problem. If League will not run or files appear to be missing or corrupted, Riot's Riot Client Full Repair Tool is a separate option: sign in to Riot Client, select the profile icon, open Settings, choose League of Legends, and select Repair. Use the repair tool for file problems, not as a substitute for choosing which settings to reset. If neither procedure resolves the issue, record what still happens and contact Riot Player Support.
