How to Get the Dragon Mount in FFXIV

If you mean the famous Midgardsormr dragon mount, you do not need to farm trials or collect a set number of mounts. Progress through the Heavensward Main Scenario Quest until the level 59 quest “Fetters of Lament” in Azys Lla, then complete it. Midgardsormr is a story reward. The quest is listed in the official Eorzea Database.

The original route sometimes gets confused with mount-collection achievements. That is not how you get Midgardsormr. You do not need 50, 100, or any other number of mounts, and you do not need to buy the dragon from the Mog Station.

What you need before starting

• Progress through the Main Scenario Quest into Heavensward and reach level 59 on a Disciple of War or Magic. The Eorzea Database lists “Fetters of Lament” as a level 59 Heavensward quest in Azys Lla.

How to get the Midgardsormr mount

1. Unlock mounts if you have not already

   Most characters will already have a mount by the time they reach Heavensward. If you do not, follow the level 20 Grand Company route above and claim your personal chocobo. Open the Mount Guide to check whether the feature is active and whether you can summon a mount.

2. Follow the Heavensward Main Scenario Quest

   Keep completing the Main Scenario Quest markers rather than searching for a special dragon quest in the sidequest list. The story takes you to Azys Lla and through the quests that lead to “Fetters of Lament.” If the quest is not available yet, continue the main story and check that your combat job is level 59.

3. Complete “Fetters of Lament” in Azys Lla

   Accept the level 59 quest from the Guidance Node in Azys Lla and finish its objective. The quest’s story brings you to one of Midgardsormr’s children. Completing this Main Scenario step awards the Midgardsormr mount; no random drop, achievement claim, currency purchase, or group farm is required. The quest also awards an Aether Current for Azys Lla.

4. Summon Midgardsormr from the Mount Guide

   After completing the quest, open the Mount Guide from the Character menu and look for Midgardsormr. Select the mount and choose Summon, or place its icon on a hotbar or cross hotbar for quicker access. The official UI guide describes the Mount Guide as the place to summon mounts you have acquired.

Can Midgardsormr fly?

Yes, but receiving a flying mount and unlocking flight in a zone are separate things. In Heavensward areas, attune to the required Aether Currents and complete the relevant Main Scenario or sidequests for that area. The Aether Currents interface shows your progress. “Fetters of Lament” contributes an Aether Current in Azys Lla, but that does not mean the mount unlocks flight everywhere or that this one quest necessarily completes every flight requirement in the zone. Check the Aether Currents menu for what remains. Flight is unlocked separately for each area.

• Check the quest log: make sure “Fetters of Lament” is marked complete, not merely accepted.
• Check your Mount Guide: look through the mount list after completing the reward step. If a mount item or whistle was placed in your inventory, use it to register the mount.
• Check story and level requirements: this is a level 59 Heavensward Main Scenario Quest in Azys Lla. Keep progressing the MSQ if you cannot accept it.
• For flight trouble, check the zone: if Midgardsormr appears but will not take off, finish that area’s Aether Current requirements. The mount itself is not the problem.

You do not need to collect extra mounts to fix a missing Midgardsormr reward. The old claim that an achievement called “I Wish I Could Fly” grants this dragon is incorrect for this mount.
