Grand Theft Auto V is not permanently free. A subscription is not free if you sign up and pay only to play GTA V. If you already pay for the service, it may be the lowest-cost way to play while the game remains included. Compare the next renewal charge with the price of owning the game.
Epic Games Store gave away the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V for a limited period in May 2020. Its official announcement described the offer as a temporary claim that players could keep. That was a past promotion, not a standing offer or evidence that GTA V returns on a schedule. Epic's weekly free-game page can include unrelated titles and free-to-play games, so seeing a “Free Games” section does not mean GTA V is free.
If the listing shows a price, there is no free claim for that listing at that moment. Do not trust unofficial “free key” pages, cracked installers, or sites asking for your Rockstar password. A legitimate giveaway is claimed through the store account that will own the entitlement.
PlayStation Plus can provide access to games in its catalog, but the plan, game, platform, and regional catalog must match. The current U.S. PlayStation Store listing for GTA V identifies the PS4 and PS5 versions and says PlayStation Plus Extra members can access it through the Game Catalog. Check the PlayStation Store signed in to your own account: catalog availability and subscription offerings can differ by country and can change.
Sony treats monthly games and the Game Catalog as different benefits. Monthly games must be added to your library during their claim window, and play still requires an active eligible membership. Before downloading, make sure the offer includes the version you can use. A PS4 license and a PS5 listing may have different terms, and GTA Online by itself is not the same purchase as GTA V with Story Mode.
GTA V has appeared in Xbox Game Pass before, but a past appearance does not guarantee that it is included now. Xbox Wire announced on April 3, 2025 that the game would return to Game Pass on April 15, including GTAV Enhanced on PC Game Pass. Treat that as a dated catalog announcement, not proof of current access. Search the official Game Pass catalog while signed in, then confirm that GTA V is included for your country, device, and plan.
On an Xbox console, search the Store or Game Pass area; on PC, check the Xbox app's PC catalog. Read the product page before selecting Install: console, PC, and GTA Online-only editions are separate listings, and a title's presence on one platform does not promise it on another. If the page offers only a purchase button, the game is not included through that catalog for the account and platform shown.
Game Pass gives you access while the subscription is active and the title remains in the catalog; it does not turn into a permanent purchase. If you would subscribe for only one month, compare the full membership charge and renewal terms against an official sale.
When a free claim or catalog listing is unavailable, an official sale is the straightforward way to get GTA V for less and keep a store license. Check the live pages at Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Rockstar Games Launcher. Compare the final checkout price for your country, not an old deal post: currency, edition, discount, and sale dates can vary.
Check whether the product includes the full game with Story Mode, GTA Online, or only a standalone online listing. On PC, Rockstar's March 4, 2025 upgrade notice says existing PC owners could upgrade to GTAV Enhanced at no extra cost. That upgrade is useful if you already own the eligible PC version; it is not a free copy for someone who does not own GTA V.
Use a storefront's own wishlist or sale notifications when available. Buy from the store where you want the license to live, and review any account-linking and system-requirement details on the product page before paying.
The simplest rule: an official giveaway can grant a free account claim, a subscription lends catalog access under its terms, and a sale lowers the purchase price. Check the live store page before downloading so you know which one you are getting.
