If your Xbox turns on but your TV shows a black screen or “No signal,” an incompatible display setting may be the cause. Xbox low-resolution mode starts the console with a basic 640 × 480 video output so you can open the display menu and choose a resolution your TV supports. It does not factory-reset the console or erase installed games.
The startup combination depends on the buttons on your console. Use the physical Power and Eject buttons on models with a disc drive, or Power and Pair on models without an Eject button. Then change the resolution from the Xbox settings menu.
Before changing settings, confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the Xbox. Make sure the cable is plugged into the console’s HDMI OUT port, then reconnect both ends. If the Xbox runs through a receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or soundbar, connect it directly to the TV for this test. Try another HDMI input or a known-good cable if available. These checks help separate a display-setting problem from a connection problem.

Use the controls physically on the console, not the controller. If the first attempt does not produce a picture, shut the console down fully and repeat the sequence, holding through the second tone. Check that you are using Pair only on a model without an Eject button.
Once the Xbox dashboard is visible, connect or pair a controller if needed. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options. Under Display, choose a resolution listed as supported by your TV. If you are unsure which mode will work, start with a lower supported resolution and refresh rate, confirm that the picture stays on, and then test higher options one at a time.
If the screen goes black again after changing a setting, boot into low-resolution mode again and select a more conservative option. When troubleshooting a 4K or HDR issue, open TV & display options > Video modes and test features such as 4K, HDR, variable refresh rate, or 120 Hz individually. A change that restores the picture points to a compatibility issue somewhere in the TV, cable, receiver, or console settings path.
Low-resolution mode is a focused way to regain a picture and correct an incompatible output setting. It is not a universal fix for every black screen: if the connection and display checks fail, the issue may require hardware support.
