Follow these steps in order. Repair is the lighter option and should be tried before Reset. The exact wording can vary slightly by Windows build.
Save any work, close the Xbox app with its X button, and wait a few seconds. If the window is frozen, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Xbox if it appears under Apps or Processes, and choose End task. This stops the app before Windows tries to repair it.

Return to Advanced options and select Reset, then confirm. Reset clears the selected app’s local data and settings, so you may need to sign in again or restore preferences. Check your library and installed-game status afterward. This is different from resetting an individual game; avoid doing that if you are unsure how that title stores local saves.
Launch the Xbox app and sign in with the correct Microsoft account. Give the library a moment to refresh, then test the original problem: open the page that crashed, check your subscription status, or launch a game that is already installed. If the app itself still crashes, move to the update and reinstall guidance below.
If Microsoft Store will not open, downloads are stuck, or Store updates are failing, press Win + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. A blank Command Prompt window may appear briefly; when it closes, Microsoft Store should open. This resets the Store cache. It is not a command for clearing Xbox app data, and it is not necessary to run it on a schedule.
Install pending Windows updates, then open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates. Relaunch the Xbox app after updates complete. Windows 10 uses a different Settings path, and Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; keep that lifecycle change in mind if you still use it.
If the app works but a PC game will not install or launch, resetting the Xbox app may not address the cause. Xbox provides a Gaming Services Repair Tool inside the PC app. Open Xbox, select your profile picture, go to Support > Gaming Services Repair Tool, and choose Start Troubleshooting. Avoid deleting folders under %LocalAppData%\Packages based on generic online instructions. Package names and app components differ, and a folder associated with Xbox Game Bar or Gaming Overlay is not automatically the Xbox app’s cache. Windows’ app-specific Repair and Reset controls are easier to target and match Microsoft’s current guidance. You also do not need a third-party “cache cleaner” for this fix.
There is no need to clear cache every week. Use Repair or Reset when troubleshooting a specific issue, and use wsreset.exe only when the Store cache is relevant.
